Top Tip - - Instant Brushes

As a canny Scot it goes against my entire upbringing to throw away a brush after only about half hour of use ( We have not yet found an easy way of cleaning them) so, for all those small lay up jobs (such as Root Close Outs, Tape Joints etc.), We make our own !!! We tried several ways of making them out of various materials but the following method proved to be the best.

Therefore, to emulate our --- ingenuity --- creativity --- originality ---resourcefulness --- cautiousness --- carefulness --- prudence --- pure damned penny pinching meanness --- stupidity ! ! ! Proceed as follows:-

The parts required are a length of ½" nylon rope, some mixing sticks (tongue depressors) & some masking tape.
Cut the round end off the mixing stick and cut about 1 ½" length of nylon rope.

Wrap one turn of masking tape round the cut end of the mixing stick. Taking one of the strands of rope, attach it to the cut end of the stick, with about half of the rope sticking out, with another turn of tape.

Take the second strand of rope and, holding it tightly against the side of the first strand, attach it to the stick with another turn of tape.
Finally take the third strand of rope and, holding it against the second, attach it with another turn of tape.
Grip the bound portion of the stick in the jaws of a vice with the cut edge of the stick flush with the jaws and the free ends of the rope sticking up.
With a clean wire brush (keep a new wire brush especially for it) brush across the rope to tease it out.
Finally trim the ends of the teased out rope to make your brush. (picture 9) About ½" to ¾" is ideal for a stippling brush, longer for a brushing brush.

And there you have it ---- your own home made brush!! It only takes 2 minutes to make --- less time than it takes to describe --- never had a bristle coming out of one yet ---- and we don't mind throwing it away.

P.S. Don’t make them too large - - it is amazing how much epoxy is absorbed in the brush and, for a very small mix, you can loose half of it in the brush!  i.e. use only two or even one strand for very small jobs.

Ted

Only thing I have ever known him to happily throw out.
